day 1

Ok, so my first ever blog. Yesterday I came back from a pool party, not having a clue what I would decide to do with my life a few short hours later. After the pool party, I went into my regular routine (which is by no means regular). I was tired after a pretty intense game of water polo, so I made myself some coffee, and began going through e-mails, reading the news, and generally doing everything to avoid the work I know I should be doing. I decided that I should continue working on preparing my speech for the humorous speech contest that I somehow got conned into doing that is coming up this Thursday. I thought I'd google the contest rules, cause I still wasn't even sure what the requirements for the speech were. One of the speeches I came across was describing his first couple of weeks adjusting to polyphasic sleep. I'd read about it before, and classified it as one of the things I'd like to do someday. Of course I went into my info-junkie mode as I often do, and started learning about polyphasic sleep, in particular, the Uberman method. The more I read, the more I could relate, and thought about how beneficial this would be if I could actually pull it off. See, I've never had (ok, for the last 10 years) a normal sleep schedule. I've always been extremely nocturnal, and I've always had a problem going to bed at a normal time. I 'did my best' to go to bed at 1am, but even this was not the norm for me, as I usually feel like going to bed around 3 or 4am. I could never go to bed at 10 or 10:30 like some people do. Of course, getting up has ALWAYS been a problem for me. Regardless of if I got 4 hours or 15 hours of sleep, I've always had trouble getting out of bed. I've always wished I could do without sleep entirely, because I always have so many things I want to do, but never enough time. So obviously the Uberman was very attractive. I decided that I wanted to do this, but would wait until I had a vacation. Of course, as a business owner, I never really get vacations, and I just took a 2 week stint off for training. No time in the forseeable future to get another 2 weeks off. As I pondered my situation, I realized that now would be as good a time as any to actually start. So at approx 11pm on Aug 30th, I decided to go for it. I setup my schedule so as to avoid conflicts with my regularly scheduled activities, and at 1:30am took my first nap. Of course I did not sleep at all. At least not for the first 18 or 19 minutes of it. So of course it sucked to get up, but wasn't really that hard at all. I know the next several will be exponentially harder for me. I went and took the dogs out for a walk, grabbed a cup of coffee, and started this blog.
